There's one sight you simply won't be able to miss. Standing on a rocky spur on the northern shore of Belfast Lough, Carrickfergus Castle dominates all approaches to the town. John de Courcy, the Anglo-Norman baron who conquered much of Ulster, started building it about 1178 and it remained fully garrisoned for 750 years until 1928. Now preserved as an ancient monument, it is open to the public and remains an iconic symbol of the town.
Besieged in turn by the Scots, Irish, English and French, the Castle saw action right up to World War II.
Carrickfergus Castle is a self-guiding facility. Information boards around the Castle allow you to explore this historic monument at your leisure whilst getting an insight into the history of the Castle. You can also purchase an information booklet with map from the Visitor Centre, which is located at the entrance to the Castle. Guided tours of the Castle are also available. Pre-booking is advisable, but essential for larger groups.

Have always wanted to know more about my heritage but neither have the money or time to travel. It was nice to see the pictures and comments from Carrickfergus .I have ancestry from the Curtis family name.Thankyou for letting me see some information.
Been here 26 years but still got that Ulster blood in me, Used to deliver bread and milk in and around Carrickfergus but bloody cold at 5am in the morning..................
What a magnificent area - would love to visit someday. My husband's ancestors left there for America in early 1700's. Would love to hear from anyone researching Neely surname of that era at: Sally1651[at]omcast.net.
I live in Carrickfergus and would be interested in meeting Patricia Juwarureh and Rosetta Jallow cos i have just moved here and been living here for the past 16 months and never bumped into a Gambian like me....Happy Easter, Kenna x
During World War II, I was billeted at the Petrol Plant near the Castle. We canned % Gal. Jerry Cans to be used during the upcoming invasion. My Company was billeted in a hotel in the business area, and the people there were so kind.
I wish I was in Carrikfergus! One day, maybe. :(
Born in Carrick in 1927. My wife and I visited in June 1990. Watched the 300th anniversary parade of King William landing and took lots of pictures of all of the interesting sites which I will always remember in and around the town. Played some golf as I was the Carrick open champion in 1954 the year I left for Canada. Think of Carrick often and all of my old friends and the experiences that I had around the Castle and "Down the old coal quay" as it was usually referred as. I have travelled around most of the world but I am still convinced that Carrick is the best place to visit because of the beautiful and interesting scenery and of course the people are the most friendly I have evermet. Best wishes to all. Andy Lindsay

I passed through on a day tour last September and Carrickfergus was every bit as beautiful then as your pictures show. It was great to see from your site that there was actually something behind that great wall and I certainly hope to be back for a bit longer to explore next time. Thank you
