Crumlin Road Gaol is currently closed for major refurbishment. The Gaol is expected to re-open late 2012.

Crumlin Road Gaol is a former prison situated in North Belfast, Northern Ireland. Designed by Sir Charles Lanyon, the Gaol was built between 1843 and 1845 it is the only Victorian era prison remaining in Northern Ireland and was one of the most advanced prisons of its day.

On March 31, 1996 the Governor of Belfast's Crumlin Road Gaol walked out of the fortified prison and the heavy air-lock gates slammed shut for the final time. The closure ended a 150-year history of imprisonment, conflict and executions.

Built within a five-sided walled site, the gaol had four wings fanning from a central area known as The Circle. The Grade A listed building is part of the social fabric of the city and the first inmates, who were forced to walk from Carrickfergus Prison in chains, arrived in 1846.

In the gaol's lifetime 17 men were executed by hanging, their bodies buried within the prison walls in unconsecrated ground. The first executions took place on an open gallows erected at the end of D-wing, in full public view. However in 1901 a new execution chamber was constructed at the bottom of C-wing and this was used until the last hanging in 1961.

Opposite the Gaol is the now derelict Crumlin Road Courthouse. An infamous tunnel links directly into its dock from the Crumlin Road Gaol. Prisoners were led to trial through this tunnel.

Guided tours of one of Belfast's most distinctive and notorious buildings bring to life stories of child prisoners, the incarceration of Suffragettes and executions carried out at the gaol.

Opening Times
The Gaol is currently closed.

I found an excellent account of some of the escapes from the Crumlin Road prison:

Visited the Prison on Tuesday the 4th of December first time back since joining the Prison Service way back in 1974-1977 The tour guide was excellent. It was an experiance for me on human behaviour especially during the troubles. As human beings across the world we must strive to learn on what motivates us to cause harm to others.

Just finished the paranormal tour, found it to be a let down. Gaol refurbishment is very well done, believe the historic tour would have been better. The guide for the paranormal tour was very biased and brought her owm view to the historic side of what sort of man Dr Ian paisley was due to him being kept in d wing. Also voiced her views on the suffragettes. Both coments not in keeping with the tour.

Jay (Belfast, Northern Ireland) 30 October 2012

Just went on a Paranormal Tour of this recently.  Definitely very interesting and creepy.  Some of the information told was depressing, but given the nature of the place, that's to be expected!  I hope one day someone invests in doing the court up.  Also, doing proper tours with more information would be nice too.  But I guess I was there for the ghosts this time!

Lesley (NI) 13 April 2012

The person who murdered my great grandmother was in this jail and the day he was to be hanged, they banished hanging, therefore he got to live! was released soon after and then ened up back inside again for assault.
Should have hanged that day for the crime he committed whilst an elderly lady was sleeping!
Cant wait to get a visit as my mother and daughter have already been and enjoyed it so much.

Gerry Lennon (Belfast) 16 March 2012

I have some fond memories of the crum, as the craic was good at times. Saying that, it was hard time and nothing like Maghaberry nor Magilligan, which are like Butlins compared to it.

Larry (Ireland) 12 March 2012

Have been there once myself but won't be back.  If there are ghosts there, I'm one of them.

Elizabeth (Scotland) 04 March 2012

Have been once and will again, if there are such things as ghosts this would be the place they would be.

Lynda (Kildare) 29 December 2011

L D (Ireland) 03 December 2011

Was in A wing in 1975-76. Worst place I was ever in.  Very oppressive and claustrophobic. Locked up alot and screws were real bigots and bullies.  When I got sentenced and sent to Long Kesh, it was like getting released.

Virtual Visit Admin (Northern Ireland) 06 June 2011

john moran (ireland) 09 February 2011

yes he was my great grandfather.he was visited by his mummy twice and his aunt peggy once.the reason they hanged him in Derry is because his mummy took the rope home home for the donkey and cart.

joseph moran (ireland) 09 February 2011

yes that was my great grandfather who was hanged.he was in the crumlin road but they took him to Derry to hang him because some of the other prisoners had hid the rope.

Lynda Greenwood (English living in DUBLIN) 05 February 2011

Re Joseph Moran MY GREAT GRANDFATHER HUNG IN

Virtual Visit Admin (Northern Ireland) 20 August 2010

Hi Linda.
Have just been informed from the Gaol itself.
"Crumlin Road Gaol is currently closed for major refurbishment. The Gaol is due to reopen Autumn 2011."

Linda (Donegal) 20 August 2010

When will the 'gaol' reopen to visitor?

George Briggs (USA) 17 February 2010

My Father was a Prison Officer Here, and he was Present at the Last Hanging, ( Robert McGladdery ) for murder. He has told me many stories of this Prison, and i plan to see it myself one day..

Aaron (Muckymore) 17 September 2009

Visited jail for 1st time last month to get specific pictures.  Was great tour and got exactly what we needed.  Found that one of the 17 men hung is a relation of my wife, came as a bit of a shock!  Well worth £5 and a real different way to spend an hour in Belfast.

Janet (Belfast) 16 September 2009

The Jail is fantastic have been several times . What a shame the Courthouse has not had the same treatment . What other City has a jail and courthouse facing each other with a underground tunnel ?

Gwen and Dawn (Co. Down) 12 September 2009

A great visit highly recommended to all. Its a pity your not able to get upstairs of the upper landings, to see the cells and the chapel etc. Took some pictures and found some amazing unexpected footage. Pity the pictures of coffin didn't turn out  :-(

john orr (n. ireland) 25 August 2009

for the benefit of daniel clarke there is no and never was a hanging "hook" the rope was attatched to the oak beam by a u bolt and chain- the chain so as the drop could be as precise as half an inch - depending on the weight age and physical condition of the condemned the drop was calculated(there was a home office table of drops) and the minimum drop permitted was 5ft that was for anyone of 200lbs and upwards and the maximum drop was 8ft 6in for anyone 118lbs or under.

Thomas O'Rourke (England) 25 August 2009

If you go to Belfast, don't miss this!!!!
This was a treat! I loved it,and I will be going back again. Took some great photos. This place is full of history and it's a place I have always wanted to vist.

robert kyle (Canada) 31 May 2009

This is a wonderful site, will be in Belfast this June and cant wait to visit Crumlin jail

nicola (lisburn) 16 May 2009

fantastic tour! didn't see a coffin but did see the burial site. a well worth it visit, can't wait to go back

Joanne (N.I) 01 April 2009

For Daniel Clarke : You can't see the coffin as it is in a room off to the side of the hanging cell. As for not seeing the noose or hook, the panorama was probably taken before it was errected. If you go on a tour of the jail now it is certainly there.

Daniel clarke (Belfast ) 01 February 2009

Why can you not see the coffin or the hanging hook in the hanging cell

Kayla (United States) 03 January 2009

this place is very interesting!! i absolutely loved it there!! great place to take the kids.
